Climate Investment holds first virtual Investment Day
9 March 2020
OGCI Climate Investment held its fourth Investment Day, providing a platform for companies with innovative technologies to help decarbonize oil and gas operations. Originally scheduled to take place in Houston at the Innovation Agora of this year’s CERAWeek, the decision to cancel the conference and prioritize the health of participants in light of the coronavirus crisis meant that the Investment Day would not go ahead as originally planned.
Instead, in the spirit of resilience and recognizing the continuing critical role of decarbonization, OGCI Climate Investment decided to take the event online, hosting an invitation-only webinar for 7 presenting companies, shortlisted from over 70 applications, to pitch their innovative technologies, business and service models which can reduce the carbon footprint across upstream, midstream and downstream operations. Such solutions were drawn from a range of focus areas including:
- Methane Mitigation & Utilization
- Low Carbon Power
- Reliability & Process Optimization
- Automation & Digitization
- Waste Heat Recovery
- Efficient Equipment
OGCI Climate Investment CEO, Pratima Rangarajan, opened the event by explaining why reducing emissions from oil and gas is such a key focus area for Climate Investment, citing calculations from the International Energy Agency (IEA) that the sector accounts for approximately 4 GtCO₂e per annum. What followed was 2 hours of intense pitching as each company took to the (virtual) stage and answered audience questions, intending to secure investment and implement their solutions across the industry at scale. The audience included over 200 participants drawn from across OGCI Climate Investment and OGCI member companies, as well as policy makers and leaders from finance and industry.
As with previous Investment Days, the process does not stop there, and the pitching companies will continue discussions with interested parties to bring their solutions to scale. This 2020 Decarbonizing Oil & Gas Operations Investment Day demonstrates that despite the challenging times we are living through, urgent action is still needed to address the climate challenge, and that OGCI Climate Investment continues with its mission to deliver significant impact on climate change and to invest in many of the technologies and porjects which have participated in these Investment and Venture Days.
