Achates Power Engine meets California’s 2027 emission regulations
12 April 2021
Achates Power, a member of the OGCI Climate Investment portfolio, has become the first company to demonstrate an internal combustion engine for heavy duty vehicles that complies with California’s upcoming ultra-low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions regulations.
The California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) standards require diesel commercial vehicle engines to reduce NOx by 90% by 2027, making it one of the most stringent air quality regulations in the world.
The 10.6 L opposed-piston engine was developed as part of a demonstration project, led by CALSTART, an organization that works with businesses and governments to develop clean transport solutions and funded by CARB, to demonstrate a low CO2, ultralow NOx opposed-piston heavy-duty diesel engine. The rigorous testing demonstrates that Achates’ engine can deliver immediate impact on both NOx and carbon dioxide emissions in a practical and cost-efficient way.
